Edaį́į́la

Edaį́į́la (aa-dying-lah) is also known as Caribou Point, and is approximately 8,700 km² in size.
Importance of Edaį́į́la
- Edaį́į́la is an extremely important cultural and ecological area for the people of Délįne, as well as the people of other communities in the NWT and Nunavut who rely on the Bluenose-East caribou herd.
- Edaį́į́la has been recommended for formal protection by several agencies to date, including the:
- Sahtu Heritage Places Joint Working Group in Rakekée Gok'é Godi: Places We Take Care Of (2000);
- Sahtu Land Use Planning Board in its Preliminary Draft Sahtu Land Use Plan (2003);
- and Great Bear Lake Working Group in the Management Plan for Great Bear Lake and its Watershed (2005).
- Edaį́į́la contains important heritage resources (Caribou Point Heritage Area and Fort Confidence Heritage Area), several Sahtu Dene and Métis Special Harvesting Areas, and important caribou and fish habitat.
- Edaį́į́la has been identified as an International Biological Programme Site.
Status
- Edaį́į́la has been put forward for protection by the Délįne Land Corporation, and is an area of interest in the PAS process.
- Sahtu Secretariat Inc. supports the permanent protection of Edaį́į́la.
- Edaį́į́la is identified as a proposed conservation initiative in the April 2009 draft of the Sahtu Land Use Plan.
- Edaį́į́la is currently in Step 3 of the PAS process. The Délįne Renewable Resource Council, the local lead on this file, submitted a proposal to the Canadian Wildlife Service to sponsor the area as a National Wildlife Area in February 2009.

- Finalize all Phase 1 assessments.
- Establish a working group once a sponsoring agency is confirmed.
