Translation of Protected Areas and Science Terminology
This glossary provides a list of suggested translations for Protected Areas and Science terminology. The workshop held for this list of words was jointly run by the Mackenzie Valley Environmental Impact Review Board (MVEIRB) and the Protected Areas Strategy. This document supplements the previous glossaries of terms for environmental assessment, oil and gas and mining terminology which are available in the MVEIRB Reference Library.
The glossary of terms is not meant to create new words for the aboriginal languages. Rather it serves mostly as a guide and record of what the participating translators learned in the workshop. The translations developed may need further refinement depending on the context of the discussion at the time of interpreting/translating.
We have not been able to work with and record each dialect. This document has not been verified by the elders in all the communities. You are encouraged to speak to your elders and community experts for translations you are unsure about. If you notice that the translation written here is different in your dialect, or you notice a mistake, you may email your revised translation to the MVEIRB office at secretary@mveirb.nt.ca
